Phoenix, New York Central School District - the 1953 Phoenician

Submitted by Charles Beams (12/8/2014)

The 1953 Phoenician was much easier to photocopy than the last two - the binding was original and it was easy to lay the book flat, so I could get my hand-scanner on it. This is MUCH faster than photographing the pages and the scans are much easier to edit. You will still find a few pages cut off and a little blurring here and there, but for the most part I think this worked well.

As always, if you are on a desktop or laptop computer, you can view the images larger by clicking on them. The uploaded photos are in a fairly large format. Download and view in your favorite  photo editor and you can view them larger still.

Another note of special interest: In the Slowpoke near the end of the book, it makes mention that the "new" Pennellville school was opened and dedicated during this school year. Now closed and sold (2014). Times change.

The cover...

The inside cover was a two page artist rendering of the proposed new high school.

Title page...

Dedication to Miss Albanese...

Candid photos of staff...

A farewell to retiring phys ed teacher and director of physical education, Mr. Noakes...

The Phoenix High School and the Alma Mater.

The Board of Education: Mrs. Allanson, Mrs. Dillon, Mr. McClatchie, Mr. Olmstead, Mr. Huntley, Mr. Henderson, Mr. Luke, Mr. Cook, Mr. Church. The District Superintendent (for Oswego County, overseeing all of the local districts) is Aura A Cole. There's a school named for her on the north Shore of Oneida Lake in the Central Sqaure School District (Constantia).
A letter from JCB himself, and Harry Howe, Vice-Principal pictured.

The faculty - I've cut some of the pages in half to make them easier to read in this format.

The Yearbook staff...

The senior class - 41 students by my count...

Candid photos...

Class history...

There were several pages of student writings in the Yearbook - these two items struck me because of the religious matter, much more common in 1953 public schools than it is now.

The other high school classes...

Football...

Basketball

Cheerleading...

A chopped up newsletter?

Band (nice photo of Mr. Castiglione)

Activities...

Certainly Mr. Birdlebough's passion...

And the ads...

Of special note for those of you familiar with EJD Middle School after 1968 and the Mr. Cali who taught there - Cali's Triangle was a restaurant located on the site of the current RFH's Hideaway and it was operated by Mr. Cali's father and uncle. Just a little fun trivia for you.

Even though there was no negotiation of contracts in those days, there was still a Phoenix Teachers' Association.
